Our Story

Gigaflow believes that rapidly building new capacity is the best way to achieve our clean energy goals. Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as solar, storage and EV charging can be deployed quickly and cost effectively, but development is being slowed by inefficiencies in the interconnection process:

  • Utility engineers or consultants study applications manually, which is time- and resource-intensive, to determine grid impacts and interconnection costs

  • After waiting months or years for study results, developers withdraw most applications due to unviably high costs

    • Nationally, 75% of DER capacity submitted for interconnection withdraws before signing an agreement

    • In active DER markets, withdrawal rates are worse - in National Grid (NY), 90% of MWs submitted in 2023 were withdrawn, a 40% increase from 2020

  • Uncertainty around application viability leads developers to submit many speculative applications, creating long queues, which further lengthen study timelines

  • Long interconnection timelines and high withdrawal rates add unnecessary overhead to DER development and slow the pace of deployment
